Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Feelings? - 2nd Grade Guidance

Lesson Outline
Skills addressed from the Guidance Roadmap:
2nd Grade:
Hardworking Student 1.I understand what it means to have self-control.  I have strategies that help me to manage difficult feelings.  I also  am gaining skills to respond to others when they are dealing with difficult feelings.

Review previous lesson. What can you do if you see someone hurting some else/being unkind? Today the focus will be on how to deal with tough feelings without hurting ourselves or others.
Read the book- Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Activity: Guess the puppets feeling and give a strategy to cope!

Each of the puppets today is in a "bad mood". Make a list with your group of feelings that could be described as bad or difficult. Is there really such a thing as a bad feeling?

Using the list that they created, groups will try to guess the emotion of each puppet. After the feeling is successfully identified, each group will suggest a coping strategy for that puppet. Try out strategies as appropriate.

Review: Give students an opportunity to share about a time when they were very upset and made a choice that successfully calmed them down.
