In our first feelings lesson in the 2nd grade we read the book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. After reading the book students worked in groups to come up with a list of tough feeling words, starting with the feelings we thought Alexander might have been dealing with. Students used that list to play a game with puppets. I had three of my puppets tell the class about a difficult situation. Each group had to guess how the puppet was feeling, using the lists that they created.
In our second feelings class, I set up four centers in the room for students to try out four different coping strategies. Students were asked to try each strategy and assess whether the strategy would work for them if they were having a difficult feeling or tough day. Students were asked to report back to their parents and share the strategies that they felt would work best for them.
