Third graders will take part in a short role-play/experiment that will allow they to analyze the effects of different types of friendship groups on our school culture. Students will identify signs of a positive friendship or peer group and will come up with strategies to deal with signs of an unhealthy relationship.
Lesson Outline
Skills addressed from the Guidance Roadmap:
Caring Classmate 1. I can initiate positive peer interactions through identifying signs of a healthy peer group versus a negative peer group. I know what a clique is and how it can negatively affect learning and make others feel excluded.
Write on the board “Signs of a healthy friendship group” and “Signs of an unhealthy friendship group”. Make a list of student ideas about signs of each. Introduce the term “clique” and how this relates to including or excluding others.
Tell students we will be doing a whole group class role-play/activity regarding peer groups. Students will be placed into groups and asked to take on characteristics of healthy and unhealthy peer groups for a short period of time.
Students will be asked to reflect on the experience and discuss what to do if you feel you are in an unhealthy peer relationship/group.
