Build a House Challenge & Being a Member of a Learning Team

Pond Cove students know that, along with being the best learner that they can be, they also come to school to help their classmates to learn.  During this lesson we will see some examples of strong teamwork, identify characteristics of a good team member, and practice our teamwork/community skills using a fun challenge.

Lesson Outline
Skills addressed from the Guidance Roadmap:
Caring Classmate 1.I can initiate and sustain positive interactions with multiple peers. I am able to show flexibility with my peers and am beginning to navigate disagreements without adult support.

Strong Community Member 1.I understand what it means to be a “thinking about others kid” and why it is important to learning and our community.  I understand that every-one in our school community needs to feel included.  I understand that it’s important to be friendly, even if I am around people I find difficult.

Show “Teamwork Pays Off” videos.

Reintroduce the idea of being a “thinking about others kid”.  Discuss what we can do to ensure that everyone in our learning team (our classroom) feels connected.  What make someone a good team member?  Create a list.

As a class decide on the three most important characteristics of a good team member.

Introduce the build a house challenge.  Students will work in groups with the materials provided to build a house.  Students will be asked to focus on the characteristics identified.  After the challenge students and groups will have time to reflect and share out.
